Four or five moderate doses were said to cure the ague. The berries were formerly used in several French carminative preparations.

                Laurel is a tree of S Europe whose glossy green foliage was used to make a crown or warmth at  honor in ancient Greece and Rome it was an any of various evergreen trees or shrubs resembling the European Laurel.

                An attractive, slow-growing tree, the laurel tree may reach heights of 22.5m (75ft.) The bark is smooth and grayish brown in young trunks but dark, reddish-brown and scaly on large older trunks. The glossy dark green leaves, are thick and leathery. In hot weather and when bruised or crushed, the leaves release an oil that has a pleasant spicy aroma. The small yellow-green flowers lack petals and are produced in dense clusters where the leaves join the stems. The fleshly fruit is a berry that resembles an olive, it is about 2.5cm long and contains a large, thin-shelled seed. The edible fruit matures in one season, turning from yellow-green to dark purple as it ripens in the spring. Squirrels, rodents and some birds feed on the fruit and seeds.

                The rich yellow brown wood is hard and beautifully grained. It is used to make fine furniture as well as smaller objects such as candlesticks and bowls. The leaves can be used to flavor soups and stews; but inhaling a large doses of the scent may cause sneezing, dizziness, and headaches.

                The genus name is derived from the Latin word for navel, a reference to the appearance of the flower cluster.

Experimental Methods

 

Experimental treatment. The following are the treatment used in the study:

                Treatment A – 20 pieces of grinded laurel seeds

                Treatment B – 10 pieces of laurel seeds that are grinded

                Treatment C – Baygon repellant as positive control.

 

Preparation of the Solution

 

1.       30 pieces of laurel seeds are gathered.

2.       The seeds were counted before pounded.

3.       The grinded laurel was put on a canister for storage.

4.       Then the bottle was labeled as bottle A, B and C.

        

Procedural Design

After that the ants were placed in each bottle.

5.       After that the ants were placed in each bottle. For each bottle it is containing 10 ants.

6.       Then the 20 laurel seeds that were grinded were put on bottle A.

7.       Then the 20 laurel seeds that were grinded were put on bottle B.

8.       Then in bottle C the baygon was sprayed. According to the manufacturer’s direction for spraying.

The researchers observe the effect of the different concentrations of the prepared solutions on ants.

Collection of Data

 

                The data were collected by counting the numbers of dead after 12 hours of waiting with 3 hours interval after putting the grinded laurel.

                In my tabular data it shows that there are 3 set-ups named set-up A, set-up B and set-up C as the control set-up. In set-up A there are 20 grinded laurel without ants, set-up B there are 10 grinded laurel and 10 ants, and in set-up C as control set-up containing Baygon spray.

                In set-up A after 3 hours only 1 ant died, after 6 hours still 1 ant died but after 9 hours 3 ants died, and after 12 hours the no of ants died is already 5. In set-up B after 3 hours there was no ant died, after 6 hours there is 1 ant was died, after 9 hours there are 2 ants died and after 12 hours there is 4 ants died. In set-up C as a control set-up after 3 hours there is 1 ant died, after 6 hours there are 3 ants died, after 9 hours it become only 2 and after 12 hours it is already 4 ants died.

Introduction

 

            Laurel, or bay, is cultivated primarily for it’s foliage, called bay leave, which are used as a seasoning in cooking. Producing yellow flowers and a black fruit, the laurel seeds prefers shaded areas with fertile, well drained soil.

 

            The leaves can be used to flavor soups, but inhaling large of the scent may cause sneezing, dizziness and headaches.

 

            The laurel, or bay, also called bay laurel and bay berry is a large evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, it has been important since classified times and is now widely cultivated in warm temperature areas as an ornamental and for its aromatic leaves, which are  used in cooking.

 

            Laurel (lauracea) is a small perennial tree native to Asia Mirror and Balkans. This plant is used mainly as an ornamental or it’s leaves as a spice. Laurel has yellow flowers and flowering starts in April. The fruit ripens in September or October with black color and they are shed if not collected. They look like a small olive with an= oval or ellipsoid shape. Laurel seeds are covered with a fleshly pericarp and a hard seed coat is found under the pericarp. The endosperm occupies most of the seed.

            Laurel, common name for a flowering plant, family, widespread in tropical and sub tropical regions, and for its representative genus. The Laurel is the common name for the family Lauracea of the order Laurels. The Laurel or bay is classified as laurus nobili, and the California bay as Umbilicus Calfornica.

            This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of grinned Laurel seeds as ant repellant.

Hypothesis of the Study

 

            The ants will stay away or repell from it because the smell of the grinded laurel spicy.

 

Objectives of the Study

 

Ø  To prove that the grinded laurel seeds can be an ant repellant.

Ø  To help ease up financial needs especially those people who cannot afford in buying expensive insecticides.

 

Significance of the Study

 

            This study signifies people’s knowledge to use some available resources around him. When people meet problem, self-instinct will help to think how to overcome it. There are ordinary people who can provide and give idea in order to have any exchange for the material which was actually used. The conduct of research is a big help to lessen the problem of people on small things especially financial matters.

   

Scope and Limitations of the Study

  

            This study is limited in the effectiveness of grinded Laurel seeds as ant repellant. The study focused only on how grinded laurel can repell the ants.

                           

Chapter 2

 

Review of Related Literature

 

             The laurel family contains between 30 and 60 genera at least 2000 species. The order to which the family belongs contains & families with about 2500 species distributed mostly in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Many species exhibit botanically interesting structures, and some of economic value because of the useful products derived from them.

 

            Although a great diversity of form occurs in the order, several features are common to most of its members and distinguish the order from others. All members are woody trees, shrubs, or vines and all produce aromatic oils in their tissues. The stamens (male floral structures) have appendages that produce nectar and the pistil (female floral part) often consists of a single carpel (ovary receptacle).

 

            The members of the order are believed to resemble the earliest flowering plants in their wood nature, floral characteristics, and details of anatomy and pollen structures. In addition, the order has a long fossil history, with specimen similar to plasts of several living genera having been found in rocks more than 65 million years old. Members of the order to which laurels belong, however, are considered more advanced than another primitive group of woody flowering plants, which have stamens and carpets that more closely resemble leaves.

 

            Unrelated plants also called laurel include the mountain laurel and several other members of its genus, along with several members of the genus

           

            The embryo is relatively small and if touches the radicular end of the seed. Since Laurel seeds contain around 40% moisture, and gradual  drying in a room conditions ranging from 10 to 30 days in five day intervals resulted in a dramatic decrease in seed germination from 29% to 0% respectively, Takos (2001) suggested that seeds might be recalcitrant. But he offered more research to provide additional information on recalcetrancy of Laurel seed. Laurel can be propagated by stem cuttings, seed or by using micro propagation and in vitro culture techniques  (Raviv et al. 1983; souayah et al. 2002). However seeds are dominant, yet the type of dormancy is not identified clearly. There are two general types of known seed dormancy:

 

            The first is endodormancy occurring due to interval factors such as morphological characteristics covering structures or the physiological  inhibiting mechanism of the embryo.

             The second exogenous dormancy due to the enclosing structures sorroundin the embryo.

5. After that the ants were placed in each bottle. For each bottle it is containing 10 ants.

6. Then the 20 laurel seeds that were grinded were put on bottle A.

7. The 10 laurel seeds that were grinded were put on bottle B.

8. Then in bottle C the baygon was sprayed. According to the manufacturer’s direction for spraying.

 

            The researcher observes the effect of the different concentrations of the prepared solutions on ants.

 

            Chapter 5

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Summary

The study was conducted at the chemistry laboratory of Maayon National High School, was conducted last January 17, 2010 with the objectives of proving that laurel seeds can be an ant repellant. An experimental method was used to determine which of the grinded laurel is most effective in controlling of ants in 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours after the application and to determine the significant difference on the survival rate of ants.

Based on the results of the experiment grinded laurel was effective in controlling of ants as observed in 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours after applying the counted grinded laurel of 10 and 20 grinded laurel used as the treatments.

Bottle B wherein there are 20 grinded laurel seeds had the fastest killing effect among the treatments on the ants but the control set-up is faster.

            Statistical analysis showed a significant difference among the treatments of grinded laurel seeds used in controlling ants.

Conclusions

            Based on the results obtained from the study, the following conclusions and generalizations are drawn:

1.      Grinded laurel treatments at 20 and 10 are effective in controlling ants and 3, 6, 9 ours after application.

2.      There is a significant difference on mortality rate of ants in 3, 6 and 9 hours after application.

 

Recommendation

            In consideration of the findings observed in this study the following are given:

1.       Grinded laurel seeds can be used in controlling of ants.

2.      The more grinded laurel used the more effective it is in killing ants.
